Policy on self archiving and institutional repositories
The Policy Press is a not-for-profit publisher that is proud of its positive relationship with the academic community it serves. We wish to see the work of our authors and contributors gaining as wide a readership as possible. We therefore support a publishing model which enables wider access to academic research while continuing to place value on the publisher’s role in providing the definitive version of authors’ work for citation purposes.
The Policy Press permits authors to archive their contributions to a range of Policy Press publications on non-commercial websites. This can be either via their own website or via their institution’s or funding body’s online repository or archive, following an appropriate embargo period. This policy varies depending on the type of publication and consequently different terms and conditions apply as set out below.

Journals policy
This policy applies to all journals published by The Policy Press. We strongly recommend that authors follow the guidelines laid out by CrossRef Institutional Repositories Committee for standard citations in author postings. Authors may also find CrossRef’s Glossary of related terms helpful.
Pre-print (pre-acceptance)
Author version (pre-peer review and editing) may be included on their own non-commercial website or their institution’s or funding body’s online repository or archive:
• article can be shared with colleagues;
• can post an electronic version on their website or employer’s website/repository only.
Post-print
Author final submitted version (post peer review but pre-copy editing and typesetting):
• embargoed for 12 months post-publication;
• on a not-for-profit server (ie personal website, institutional server, not-for-profit subject based servers);
• must be clearly identified as the author’s post-print version and state that it is not to be cited;
• with full referencing and online link to the final published Definitive Version of scholarly record (currently held on Policy Press’ behalf by Ingenta) with acknowledgement wording as below.
Acknowledgement wording:
"This is a post-peer-review, pre-copy edited version of an article published in [insert name of relevant Policy Press journal here]. The definitive publisher-authenticated version [insert complete citation information here] is available online at: [insert URL here]"
There is not a requirement for authors to seek permission to post material as long as it complies with these conditions.

Monographs
Authors may post their post-print, author final version (pre-copy editing and typesetting) contribution or an extract of it (eg a chapter in an edited collection) with prior permission. Only up to 20% of the total work is to be posted online altogether on publicly accessible websites or institutional repositories. The following conditions apply:
• embargoed for 24 months post-publication;
• on not-for-profit server (ie personal website, institutional server, not-for-profit subject based servers);
• must be clearly identified as the author’s post-print version and state that it is not to be cited;
• with full referencing and online link to details of the published version on The Policy Press’ website with acknowledgement wording as below.
Acknowledgement wording:
"This is a post-peer-review, pre-copy edited version of an extract/chapter published in [insert name of relevant Policy Press monograph here]. Details of the definitive published version and how to purchase it are available online at: [insert URL link to Policy Press website here]”
We do require authors to seek permission to post material of this kind. Contact the julia.mortimer@bristol.ac.uk who will provide you with an acknowledgement and website link. Please allow up to 4 weeks notice for such requests. Should The Policy Press decide that any material posted under these guidelines represents a threat to their business they shall be entitled to request that it be removed.
